A coalition of health care organizations, called the Alliance for Healthcare from the Eye, is pushing for increased adoption of AI-driven screening techniques that could offer insights into ocular and systemic health.

The Alliance for Healthcare from the Eye was launched at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology meeting in Salt Lake City, according to a press release from the organization.

The Alliance for Healthcare from the Eye is pushing for increased adoption of AI-driven screening techniques that could offer insights into ocular and systemic health.

“The eye offers a noninvasive, high-resolution window into the body’s vascular, neurologic and metabolic systems,” founding member Robert N. Weinreb, MD, distinguished professor and chair of ophthalmology at the University of California, San Diego, said in the release. “With advanced ophthalmic diagnostics, AI can help identify early indicators of heart disease, kidney dysfunction, neurodegeneration and other systemic diseases — before symptoms arise.”

The coalition stems from Healthcare from the Eye, an existing collaboration between Topcon Healthcare and Microsoft that focuses on prescreening for systemic and neurological diseases via AI analysis of retinal images and other ocular data.

“This approach is already helping bridge care gaps, but Topcon and Microsoft leaders quickly realized that the success of this vision requires collaboration of many stakeholders,” Topcon said in a statement to Healio. “To address this need, they started the Alliance for Healthcare from the Eye, a consortium of health care stakeholders working together to expand access to affordable health care and improve clinical outcomes by leveraging technology.”

The coalition plans to hold two live meetings per year around the times of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and ARVO meetings, according to Topcon.

According to Topcon, coalition members include Illinois College of Optometry, New England College of Optometry, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, Duke University, Northwestern University, Labcorp, Morehouse School of Medicine, Ochsner Health, Stanford Byers Eye Institute, ECU Health, BeeKeeperAI, Toku, Seqster, Pangaea Data, University College London, Moorfields Eye Hospital, Mid-Michigan Health Centers, RetiSpec, Simi Group and ZS.
