Mercy injury prevention specialist shares tips on how to pick safe costumes for kids this Halloween

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) – Halloween is just around the corner and many parents will be picking out costumes for their kids. It’s important to be safe and keep safety in mind when picking out those fun outfits.

Leigha McKinney with Safe Kids Springfield recommends wearing bright colors while you’re out trick-or-treating.

“We love the bright color costumes, obviously, but I know certain folks want to be a little bit more spooky and they want to wear the dark colors, so we just ask that they add reflective tape to those things, or they have the reflective bags. You can even do glow sticks, glow wristbands, flashlights to help be seen by those drivers,” said McKinney.

Another thing you want to consider is appropriately fitting costumes.

“We like to get costumes that actually fit the kiddo. So nothing too long. I know a lot of Halloween costumes have that drapey kind of effect to make it look, you know, spooky, but we want them to actually be able to fit. So we don’t want to be tripping,” said McKinney.

You also want to avoid big hats and masks. Those can obscure a child’s vision and make it easy for them to not see cars coming.

“Masks are so much fun, but they really obscure the visuals, as far as when you’re looking for cars and crossing the street, because our typical Trick-or-Treat time is between 5:30 and 9:30 give or take. So it typically is dark when they’re trick-or-treating. So having those masks, those big hats, anything like that, is really hard to see,” said McKinney.

One of the biggest dangers when trick-or-treating is cars.

“We see that a lot during this type time of year, just because we do have a lot of pedestrians that are getting those candies and all that kind of thing. So that is always one of our biggest our biggest issues is cars running kiddos over and backing out of driveways,” said McKinney.

That’s why following these tips is so important, to keep kids safe.

“I think just as far as when you’re when you’re picking out those costumes, kiddos typically will do very popular characters, so just make sure that those costumes fit, and it can be a really good outcome when you have costumes that fit, costumes that are visible, because your kiddo will be able to have a really good time, and they won’t be injured in the process,” said McKinney.

Picking out appropriate costumes can help keep everyone safe on Halloween.
