Alzheimer’s care conferences scheduled
THE GORGE — The Alzheimer’s Association of Oregon and SW Washington have provided a list of 10 “Healthy Habits for your Brain” in its August 2024 newsletter.
“Maintaining a healthy brain is crucial, especially with age,” reads the release. “While aging naturally changes the brain, it is not always in decline. Cognitive decline may be slowed, and conditions like Alzheimer’s aren’t a normal part of getting older.”
Everyday actions can greatly impact brain health:
1. Challenge Your Mind: Stay curious and engage in mentally stimulating activities. It benefits your brain in both the short and long term.
2. Keep Learning: Lifelong learning reduces the risk of cognitive decline. Take classes at local libraries, colleges, or online platforms.
3. Stay Active: Even 20 minutes of exercise to gets your heart rate up — like walking, dancing, or gardening — adds movement to your day and benefits brain health.
4. Protect Your Head: Wear helmets during activities like biking and always use seat-belts to prevent head injuries and falls.
5. Quit Smoking: Quitting smoking reduces the risk of cognitive decline to levels comparable to those who have never smoked.
6. Manage Blood Pressure: Control high blood pressure with medications and healthy habits like diet and exercise.
7. Control Diabetes: Manage or prevent type 2 diabetes through healthier eating, physical activity, and medication when necessary.
8. Eat Well: A diet rich in vegetables, lean meats, nuts, and berries—and low in processed foods—supports brain health.
9. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Consult healthcare providers to determine and maintain a healthy weight for optimal brain function.
10. Get Quality Sleep: Good sleep habits are crucial for brain health. Minimize disruptions and seek help for sleep-related issues.
These tips will be included in discussions at the Mini McGinty Conference, along with other “educational sessions and workshops” focused around “brain health and community resources.”
