…Imo govt, others commend firm
Seplat Energy JV Healthcare has moved to sustain its comprehensive “Eye Can See” treatment programme since its inception in 2012 in partnership with Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
It has provided free, comprehensive eye care to over 22,084 patients, performed 726 life-changing eye surgeries as well as distributed 12,307 prescription glasses.
This was disclosed by Ibi-Ada Itotoi, managing director of the Seplat East Onshore Limited, a subsidiary of Seplat Energy PLC, who was represented by Emmanuel Otokhine, the Eastern Asset (EA) Base Management Seplat, at the 2025 NNPC/Seplat JV Healthcare, “Eye Can See” initiative, held at the Fullmoon Hotel Owerri.
According to Itotoi, “The ‘Eye Can See’ programme, an initiative that embodies the very spirit of Seplat Energy Plc’s commitment to sustainable development, inclusive healthcare, and meaningful corporate social responsibility.
“At Seplat Energy, we believe that true corporate success is measured not only by financial performance, but by the positive and enduring impact we create in the lives of the people and communities we serve.
“Our approach to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is rooted in the conviction that business must be a force for good, driving progress, equity, and well-being for all.
“Today, we celebrate one of our flagship healthcare initiatives: the “Eye Can See” programme. Since its inception in 2012, this initiative—delivered in partnership with the (NNPC—has provided free, comprehensive eye care to over 22,084 patients, performed 726 life-changing eye surgeries, and distributed 12,307 prescription glasses.”
He said that they have a mission to reduce preventable blindness, promote early detection of eye diseases, and enhance the quality of life for all beneficiaries.
“We screen for underlying health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, provide health education, and build local capacity by training healthcare professionals and community workers. This holistic approach ensures that our impact is both immediate and sustainable, creating a ripple effect of hope and empowerment,” he said.
Itotoi informed that Seplat Energy’s CSR strategy was aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on good health and well-being, quality education, clean water and sanitation, and economic empowerment. Our investments are not acts of charity, but deliberate, strategic interventions designed to raise living standards, bridge healthcare gaps, and foster inclusive growth.
Also, Oluwashiyi, managing director (MD) Off-Stream investment, one of the companies associating with Seplat Oil Nig Ltd who spoke through an official of their establishment, Halimat Wilson, said that the programme was put in place to help communities make a difference in the lives of the people.
“We have so far performed 39 eye surgery and there is still much work to be done and we are expanding our efforts and not just to provide eye care but to support the elders,” she said.
Emeka Mgbudem, commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Gas Development, Imo State, assured that the Imo State Government would continue to deliver on her mandate to improve the lives of the people not only on health care but also in the areas of education and infrastructure in the various communities.
“NNPC/Seplat are making serious impacts on us on preventable eye diseases such as cataract and vision allows us to work, connect and read but blindness dampens our spirit,” he said.
Also speaking, Eze Sylvester Okwudo, traditional ruler of Obuomadike Community Egbema, commended NNPC/Seplat for their worthy initiatives and implored them to keep up the good job.
Among the beneficiaries were: Agatha Njoku and Veronica Okereke who all expressed gratitude to their benefactors for alleviating their health challenges.
